Community Advocacy Training
The Poverty Elimination Collaborative’s Community Advocacy Training is a multi-week advocacy training for individuals from Guelph and Wellington County who have experience living with low income and are interested in creating change on poverty issues.
For many years, this training has supported community members to build confidence, strengthen advocacy skills, and influence local conversations, policy change at all levels of government, and solutions related to income, housing, decent work, food insecurity, health and wellbeing.
Participants receive practical training and support in areas such as:
- Advocacy and system change
- Public speaking and presentations
- Media engagement and messaging
- Storytelling for social impact
- Writing for advocacy
- Understanding government and decision-making processes
Community Advocacy Training creates opportunities for people with lived experience to shape community change and ensure decision-makers hear directly from those most impacted by poverty.
Participants who have completed the training have gone on to:
- Speak at community events, panels, and conferences
- Advocate to elected officials and at public meetings
- Share their experiences through media interviews, blogs, and letter writing
- Participate in and inform advocacy campaigns and public education
- Move into leadership, peer, and employment opportunities within the community sector
Community Advocacy Training helps to strengthen community leadership and build a stronger movement to eliminate poverty in Guelph and Wellington County.
