On December 27, 2012, the provincial government announced $42 million in one-time funding to help municipalities deliver housing and homelessness programs in 2013-14.
The announcement came after pressure from municipalities and poverty advocates to cover the funding gap created by cuts to two support programs: the Community Startup and Maintenance Benefit, which provides money for people combating homelessness; and discretionary health benefits, such as glasses, prosthetics and dental care for people on social assistance.
