• A Canadian citizen, and
• At least 18 years of age or older on voting day, and

While visiting the site, check whether your municipality uses wards — geographic areas within your municipality that elect their own representatives. If it does, you’ll vote for candidates running in your ward. If it doesn’t, you’ll vote for candidates running across the municipality (known as at-large candidates). If you live in a town or township in Wellington County, you’ll also vote for a County councillor representing your County ward.

If you are a City of Guelph voter, you will vote for:

1. Guelph City Council

• Mayor — The Mayor serves on Guelph City Council and represents the city as a whole.
• City councillors — Guelph has six wards, and each ward elects two councillors to City Council.

The Mayor and 12 councillors form Guelph City Council. They are elected for four-year terms, and each member has one vote, including the Mayor.

If you are a Town or Township voter, you will vote for representatives at three levels:

1. Town or Township Council

• Mayor — The Mayor represents your town or township as a whole.
• Town or Township councillor(s) — Depending on your municipality, you’ll vote for councillor candidates who represent your ward or candidates who run across the municipality (known as at large).

2. County of Wellington Council

• County councillor — The County of Wellington has nine councillors who are elected by County ward. If you live in a town or township, you’ll vote for the County councillor representing your County ward.

The County of Wellington (County) is an “upper tier” municipality made up of seven local municipalities (Town and Townships), which are referred to as “lower tier” municipalities. County council has 16 members: seven mayors and nine directly elected ward councillors.

3. School Board

A school board trustee is a community representative and advocate for public education, elected to a four-year term.

Together, trustees form the Board of Trustees that governs the school board and set its vision and goals, develop policies, allocate resources, and drive programs and operations.

All residents vote for trustees in one of four board systems (English Public, English Catholic, French Public, French Catholic), and you do not need to have children.

While you’re not required to pick/make a designation, you do have the option to choose which school board you support through the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). If you don’t make a choice, your support will default to the English Public school board.

Advance polls are voting opportunities held before election day. They give you the option to cast your ballot early if you can’t or don’t want to vote on election day. Check your municipality’s official election information for advance voting dates, time and locations.
