Ontario has launched public consultations on the changing nature of the modern workplace.
The consultations will consider how the Labour Relations Act, 1995 andEmployment Standards Act, 2000 could be amended to best protect workers while supporting businesses in our changing economy.
Workplace trends that will be examined in the consultation include:
- The increase in non-standard working relationships such as temporary jobs, involuntary part-time work, and self-employment.
- The rising prominence of the service sector.
- Globalization and trade liberalization.
- Accelerating technological change.
- Greater workplace diversity.
On June 25, 2015, a public consultation session was held in Guelph and the following submission was presented to the Special Advisors: PTF Submission to the Changing Workplaces Review.
Our submission references two important reports by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Workers’ Action Centre:
- A Higher Standard: The case for holding low-wage employers in Ontario to a higher standard (CCPA)
- Still Working on the Edge: Building decent jobs from the ground up
We encourage community members to review these reports, as well as the Ministry of Labour’s Guide to Consultations, and provide comments, ideas, and suggestions to:
