Guelph poverty fighters target proposed bus fare hike

GUELPH — Members of local groups working to alleviate poverty will argue against a 25-cent transit fare hike at upcoming council deliberations on the 2011 budget.

Randalin Ellery, co-ordinator of the Guelph and Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination, said low-income people in Guelph feel “trapped” as it is, with no affordable means of getting around.

“It’s really exactly the opposite of what so many families or individuals in our city need,” she said of the proposed hike. “It’s just one more challenge for people living on low income. It’s one more stress to deal with.”
