The Seed has a new website!

It’s an exciting new space to share information, provide links to community food resources and keep people updated on its work! Community members are encouraged to explore the site and share it with others. The site can be found here.

The Seed Community Food Hub

The Seed Community Food Hub Project received a $267,00 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. You can read more about that announcement HERE. More information about The Seed Community Food Hub is available HERE.

What is The Seed Community Food Hub?

The Seed Community Food Hub Committee is a collaborative initiative, supported by the Guelph & Wellington Task Force for Poverty Elimination, aimed at creating a space to bring people together with food to improve health, community, access and advocacy efforts.

The Seed will provide emergency food access in a dignified setting that allows people to regain their self-worth. People learn cooking and gardening skills there, and kids develop positive attitudes towards healthy foods. Community members find their voices on the issues that matter most to them, and people find friends and support.

Where did the idea for The Seed come from?

Since 2010, the Poverty Task Force has been working with community partners to address the increasingly challenging issues experienced by providers and clients with the local emergency food system. During that time, long-term and permanent solutions were researched and explored with the support of the Institute for Community Engaged Scholarship/The Research Shop. The reports are available here:

Although the local emergency food system has experienced some positive progress over the past three years, significant barriers continue to exist for those accessing and providing emergency food assistance. A group of community stakeholders were called together to put forward a set of recommendations that would lead our community toward a new vision for emergency food services in Guelph-Wellington. The recommendation report is available here:

How is the vision for The Seed different from a Food Bank?

The vision for The Seed is rooted in the Community Food Centre model. You can learn about this model, and how it differs from a food bank here: What is a Community Food Centre? How is it different than a food bank?

This project was funded in part by a grant from The Guelph Community Foundation (www.guelphcf.ca)
